The Saskatoon berry is a member of the vast Rosacea family, more specifically the pome fruit sub-family that includes aronia, apple tree, and pear tree. This type includes between 20 and 30 species of trees and bushes. Flowers produce an edible fruit called Saskatoon berries.

The Saskatoon berry is a tiny fruit that is also known as the « little pear ». Its blue color is attributable to the presence of anthocyanin from which is the antioxidant compound of this bushberry
